LISTEN: Drake — “Marvin’s Room”

It’s been two years since Drake signed with Young Money and released his much anticipated debut album, “Thank Me Later.” Long gone were the days of his acting career as the wheelchair bound Jimmy on “Degrassi.”

Instead, Drake emerged as a rapper with the ability to go hard, as well as tap into his emotional sensibilities. Soon he was everyone’s favorite new rapper, winning awards left and right, and topping the charts with songs like “Best I Ever Had” and “Every Girl.”

Since turning the rap world upside down, Drake has created a new album, titled “Take Care,” which is set for release on October 24th.

In an interview with BBC 1 Radio, Drake confided that he felt “Thank Me Later” was rushed, and that he wanted to take time to fully craft this new album. He’s since tapped up-and-coming R&B wunderkind, The Weeknd and Jamie xx, of dreamy indie band The xx to contribute music.

He’s since released two songs: a rap over Jai Paul’s “BTSTU” titled “Dreams Money Can Buy,” and most recently, the sentimental “Marvin’s Room.”

The songs are polar opposites, lyrically. “Dreams Money Can Buy” is brash and bold, with the rapper boasting about his money, success and women, over Jai Paul sweetly singing “Don’t fuck with me.”

But where that song is shameless, “Marvin’s Room” is an outpouring of emotion, with Drake constantly drunk dialing the same girl, even though she’s with someone new.

It’s easy to see The Weeknd’s influence in this track, but if this is the direction Drake’s album will take, it’s nothing to complain about. We’ll probably be thanking him much sooner rather than later.
