The highly anticipated exhibit The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is making its final stateside appearance at the de Young Museum in San Francisco at the end of the month.

The exhibit, which is a retrospective of Gaultier’s 30-year career, will include over 100 of his haute couture creations as well as photographs and items from his collaborations within the film and music industries.

Gaultier also worked with a theater company in Montreal to create animated mannequins, 30 of which will be on display.

Gaultier began his career as an assistant to the legendary Pierre Cardin in Paris. He quickly established himself as l’enfant terrible in the fashion industry and became known for his bold designs that often provided social commentary. Gaultier is a master of crafting designs that are simultaneously beautiful and provocative.

The de Young will feature lectures and the screening of a film about the designer in the weeks leading to the exhibit’s unveiling.  Tickets can be reserved directly through the museum.

The programming will be capped with The Grand Fête, a celebration with Gaultier himself in attendance.

The exhibit will run from March 24 – August 19 before heading to Spain.
