Style: Three Ways to Rock a Furry Sweater

For winter, one of our favorite closet additions is a furry sweater. It’s chic AND functional, since it will keep you warm all season long. Kind of a no brainer, right?!

While it may not seem so, this statement piece is surprisingly versatile.

Here we show you three ways to rock a furry sweater this winter.

Polished

Parosh's Querubin sweater will infuse bold pops of color into your winter wardrobe. For a chic polished look, pair the sweater with a midi-length skirt by Nicholas Window. Keep accessories to a minimum and let your outfit take the spotlight. Burgundy Jimmy Choo velvet pumps and a shiny satchel round out this sleek look.

Weekend Warrior

Between brunch and getting last minute holiday shopping in, you need a comfy yet pulled together outfit. Here the Parosh sweater is paired with Junya Watanae's patchwork denim for a fun play on textures. Classic Acne loafers and a trench top off this look that will let you shop til you drop.

Borrowed from the Boys

You're bound to rack up travel miles this season. Why not do it in style? Here we pair the Parosh sweater with Splendid overalls for a tomboy-inspired look. 3.1 Phillip Lim's backpack is the perfect bag to carry your essentials. Top everything off with Equipment's floral bomber to add a dose of feminine allure to your look.

Film to Fashion: Finding Inspiration in Holiday Cult Classics - The Holidazed Issue

Tis the season to indulge in all things fashionably festive. From decorating to sporting sparkly everything, we can't help but get into the holiday spirit. Not only do we have Mariah's infectious holiday anthem on repeat, we love loading up our Netflix queue with classics.

Here we've put together four looks inspired by our top picks for best holiday films.

Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp's classic is both sad and romantic, and in it he gives one of his best performances. The imagery of this beautiful film is instantly recognizable. We've paired a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier pleated skirt with tough-as-nails creepers for a Goth- inspired look. Top off this look with daggers, of course!

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington is the pumpkin king in Tim Burton's animated film. Here we opted for velvet to channel Jack's regal look. We've paired a DVF blazer with J Brand's flared trousers for an update of the classic le smoking. Alaia laser cut booties and a Saint Laurent silk collar are the perfect complements to this look.

A Christmas Story

Who can forget that scene from one of our childhood favorites? We bring you a look that isn't quite as scandalous as the lamp in Ralphie's home. Topshop's mini has just the right amount of fringe. Pair it with a Chinti and Parker sweater for a bit of texture. Mesh booties take the place of fishnets for a look that isn't too over-the-top for your next holiday soirée.

Elf

Will Ferrell's comedy became an instant classic when it debuted. Who can resist Buddy, the lovable elf? Get festive in Alice & Olivia's jacquard mini dress. Top off this look with ultra-feminine accessories. We love WHBM's bow belt, paired with a fuzzy clutch. Beautiful yellow drop earrings take the place of bold tights.

Battle of Styles: East Coast vs. West Coast

Let's face it. East coast and west coast styles are everything.

While casual, albeit luxurious and designer brands, basics define west coast style, that is not at all the case in the east.

In California, laid back (yet totally premeditated) outfits are often infused with bohemian vibes. The end result? Casual chic at its best.

East coast style, on the other hand, is much more polished and sophisticated. Outfits are fashion-forward and studded with confident statement pieces.

Whether you're an east coast or west coast girl, we're laying the style battle out for you here.

Here are two takes on fall fashion. Both sick, yet very different:

[note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

West Coast

If you are bathing in that California sun, opt for basics that you can easily layer and wear all year--considering the weather pretty much remains the same year round. APC's Dolly coat is a timeless staple that will instantly pull together a casual look. Neutrals get a ton of play on the west coast. Pair slightly distressed Frame Denim cigarette pants with Vince's raglan sweater and a pair of camel booties. The result is a look that is one part casual and one part California cool.

[/note] [note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

East Coast

We totally agreed with The Beach Boys, when they sang, "Well East coast girls are hip/I really dig those styles they wear." It's true.

So city girls, never be afraid to make a statement.

Set your inner Carrie Bradshaw free! But of course a bold winter coat is a must. An MSGM topper provides not only a rich cherry hue, but also a trendy fur collar.

Who said less is more, again? Because they were wrong. Pair Alice + Olivia's sleek leather pants with Saint Laurent studded booties for an edgy, downtown vibe. Balance out this look with a cobalt sweater and refined jewelry by Pamela Love and you'll kill it.

Five Essential Ways You Can Style Boots with a Chunky Knit and Skirt Combo

When the weather drops, we must admit our worn-in Levi's and motorcycle boots get tons of mileage. This no fuss approach to fall dressing make them a no brainer and a classic go-to.

Inevitably, as the months drag on, we start itching for something other than this tried-and-true pairing.

We've rounded up some of our favorite boots that are bound to be in heavy rotation come winter.

But instead of reaching for your 501's, opt for skirts, a warm, chunky knit and opaque tights to get you out of a style rut.

MINIMALIST

Perfect for an edgy, downtown vibe, Iro's Jalie Skirt is anything but basic. Pair it with Maison Martin Margiela's tilted boots for a luxe minimalist effect. Ann Demeulemeester's cuff provides a great contrast to Johnny's slouchy sweater to round out this sleek, polished look.

WILD, WILD WEST

Suno's embroidered skirt paired with Guess' Finlay booties give a fresh update to this look inspired by the wild west. Channel your inner "Little House on the Prairie" vibes by topping off this look with a Rag & Bone fedora.

90s

Thankfully, in fashion everything is cyclical. Thanks to Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane, 90s fashion has definitely made a comeback, and we can't get enough. Update old favorites by opting for richer textures and neutral colors. River Island's skater skirt pops, when paired with leather over-the-knee boots and Alexander Wang's sleek Oyster backpack.

GLAM

You'll be party ready when pairing Marios Schwab's sequined pencil skirt with Shoe Republic's peep toe booties. Little else is needed in terms of accessories for this ultra feminine look. We just couldn't resist upping the glam factor by adding Elizabeth and James' shearling bag to round out this look.

EDGY

Pair Saint Laurent's studded moto boots with a color block skirt for a bold, edgy look. A heavy metal cuff by Reed Krakoff offsets a feminine ear cuff and provides a nice compliment to the heavy boots.

3 Holiday Party Looks You Need to Try Now

Now that the holidays are upon us, it's time to start prepping outfits for the endless parties you'll be attending all season long. No matter the occasion, now is the time to pile on metallics, sequins and luxe textures.

We've rounded up a few of our favorite looks that will help you hit the holiday party circuit in style.

[note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

Office Party

Pair ladylike pieces with an embellished sweater for a work appropriate look. Miu Miu's sweater adds minimal sparkle while remaining festive. Balance the chunky cableknit by adding a soft, lace skirt by MSGM. Rich burgundy heels add a touch of color to round out this look.

[note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

Dance Party

Velvet is one of our favorite textures during the holidays. Dress it up for nighttime by opting for a frock with cut-outs. We love Topshop's skater dressed pair with a bold statement necklace by Lulu Frost. Add a minimal clutch and strappy heels that are perfect for dancing the night away.

[/note]

[note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

House Party

Easy, no fuss separates are key when attending a house party. Topshop's sequin joggers add high voltage sheen to this look. Balance the pants with a muted sweater and jewel toned heels. We've rounded out this look with sleek two-tone jewelry by BCBG and Delfina. The result is a tomboy-inspired look that is party ready.

Unexpected Fashion Companions: Plaid x Sequins

Plaid has long been a classic in wardrobes and a go-to come fall. We love it's versatility - what other print is a staple in looks ranging from preppy to grunge worthy?

For fall, Thakoon and Altuzarra gave traditional plaids a fresh update. Oversized prints in vibrant hues were seen all over the fall runways.

In this week's Unexpected Fashion Companions, we've decided to shake things up by pairing oversized plaids with sequins for an unexpected combination that is fun and anything but stuffy.

Why It Works:

The relatively monochromatic palette keeps this look from being too busy. ChicNova's buffalo plaid coat offers a boxy silhouette and a great contrast to the fitted separates.

We love the incorporation of different colored sequins, which is why we've chosen Phillip Lim's sequined skirt. Add Topshop's cropped sweater to keep your look young and fresh. The overall result is more chic and less Dynasty.

Saint Laurent's creepers add a dash of masculinity to keep everything from being too sweet.  Be sure to use accessories sparingly by adding black opaque tights and a Eugenia Kim beanie to round out this look.

The Art of Dressing: Exploring Esteban Vicente's "Blue, Red, Black and White"

Esteban Vicente was an abstract expressionist whose career spanned eight decades. His work was marked by bright palettes and stunning forms. He often resorted to jigsaw patterns in his collages and paintings. For fall we've turned to one of his paintings, "Blue, Red, Black and White" for an artful look.

Fausto Puglisi's coat is perfect for fall and recalls the oversized shapes in Vicente's painting. We love the addition of the pops of blue in Opening Ceremony's Elise boots.

They provide a stark contrast to the black, red and white color combo. Isabel Marant's Hutt skirt recalls the sharp lines of his painting and is a great compliment to the bold accessories in this look.

Meshing Around

Often incorporated into their sporty luxe designs, designers like Alexander Wang and Rebecca Minkoff have helped mesh become a hit on the runway each season. The loosely woven fabric shows no sign of going away anytime soon. One of the reasons for its staying power is that it manages to show just enough skin when needed and adds a small dose of laid back cool to any look.

Recently we've started to see ladylike interpretations of mesh and we can't get enough. Valentino's heavily embroidered designs incorporated mesh panels that resulted in lush designs rather than your expected minimalist take. From ladylike to casual we've rounded up our favorite takes on this airy transitional fabric.

Meshing Around DressThe Little Mistress Dress is flirty and will brighten up a look instantly. Slip on a cropped leather jacket to polish off this ultra-feminine look.

Meshing Around JeansThe oversized River Island tee shines when paired with white skinnies and neutral accessories. The floral motif adds a hint of texture to keep this look from veering into minimalist territory.

Meshing AroundSporty meets ladylike with Cynthia Rowley's short sleeved top. Paired with a canary yellow Tibi skort, the statement accessories add a wow factor to this look.

Unexpected Fashion Companions: Victorian x Street Style

Victorian inspired designs have become a constant on runways. From luxurious velvet, corsets and rich brocade these details are mainstays in the collections of designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant, and Marc Jacobs. For the summer, we've dreamed up a look that combines the delicate flourishes of lace with more urban, street style influences. The result is a cool mix of feminine and tomboy touches for a surprisingly chic summer look.

Unexpected Fashion Companions Victorian X Street Style LOOK

Why it Works: Isabel Marant's embroidered blouse provides the dreamy Victorian inspiration for this outfit. With its lace panels and silk ruffles, the blouse is ultra-feminine. The on-trend NSF boyfriend jeans contrast nicely with the delicate flourishes of the blouse. The outfit is topped off with clean accessories for a polished and clean result. The rounded toe of the classic Ferragamo flats is reminiscent of the Victorian era and Marc by Marc Jacobs' bold crossbody infuses the look with a bold modern touch.

Leather in Extreme Weather: 4 Leather Looks We Love for Summer

Say what? Leather in warmer weather?!

Sure, it may not seem like the first thing you would spring for in soaring temperatures. Yet leather was incorporated into the Spring/Summer '14 collections of various designers.

Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone, Jil Sander and Isabel Marant featured sleeveless renditions, muted colors and fresh silhouettes to give luxe leather a seasonally appropriate vibe.

We've put together four looks that we love. From flirty looks for a night on the town to sporty, relaxed outfits perfect for hanging out incorporating this trend in extreme weather is a breeze.

Remember to balance everything out with paper-thin basics and airy accessories and you'll be sure to pull off this look without breaking a sweat!

Unexpected Fashion Companions: Western Wear x Nautical Motifs

Unexpected Fashion Companions: Western Wear X Nautical Motifs

Western wear has long been the hallmark in Ralph Lauren's design aesthetic. While we've come to expect collections tinged with western detailing from the all-American designer, it was a nice surprise when Karl Lagerfeld staged Chanel's Métiers D'Art 2013 collection in Dallas, TX. From denim, to fringe and feathers, to prairie skirts and cowboy boots, the entire Chanel collection was a nod to all things from the Wild West.

Of course, Lagerfeld made sure that signature Chanel elements were infused into his collection. Taking a cue from his Pre-Fall collection, we wanted to see if incorporating another element into a western inspired outfit was possible. Or would it be overkill and veer on the side of campy? Deciding to add nautical motifs, we show you how to walk the fine line of downtown cool versus a day at the rodeo.

Western Wear X Nautical Motifs

Why it works: Keeping the color palette limited to blues with a pop of red keeps the look cohesive. Cobalt adds a welcome splash of color to break up the rich navy's in the outfit.

Marc Jacob's Striped Coat is a fresh take on nautical stripes and the perfect way to top off this look.  Instead of clashing with the rest of the outfit, the colors and stripes nicely compliment the indigo hues in the Comme des Garcons' Patchwork Jeans.

Steve Madden's Sarni Boots offer a fun update on the classic cowboy boot resulting in a downtown inspired look.  Carnet de Mode's suede bag adds a bit of texture and a bright pop of color to the outfit, and Betsey Johnson's earrings add a bit of whimsy and complete this look.

The Punk Issue - The Style Dialogues: Perfectly Punk to Conservatively Corporate

The Style DialoguesMeets Obsession mag

How Can I Blend into a Corporate Environment Without Losing My Punk Edge?

Dear MO,

The good news is that I just got hired for a corporate gig for a full-time position. For the last five years, I have been working from home, which has allowed me to take fashion risks that would otherwise be frowned upon in a conservative workplace.

I realize that my ombre pink hair and my new corporate job will probably not be able to co-exist. And I’ll probably need to cover some of my tattoos, too. But is there a way that I can fashionably fit into a corporate environment and still proudly display my punk roots, or should I throw in the hat and opt for the boring black suit? Help!

- Rebecca in DC

Meets Obsession mag

Dear Rebecca,

Congrats on the new gig! Throw in the hat for boring black suits? Never! Don’t you think there are too many of those in DC already?! You definitely want to let your personality shine in your workplace without being too showy, and the best place to start is with accessories. Adding a touch of edge into your corporate wardrobe will not only let you stay true to yourself but means you don’t have to feel drab in a conservative environment.
I love Valentino’s Rockstud collection for its feminine twist on studs and spikes. A pair of studded slingbacks would complement a more muted ensemble. This collection has been so popular that it has expanded into bags so your carry-all can also be chic and anything but basic.

Have fun coming up new ways of incorporating edgy touches into your new wardrobe. And really, what is more punk rock than testing limits?

Unexpected Fashion Companions: Botanical Prints x Neon

Botanical Prints X Neon

Two of our favorite spring trends have been botanical prints and bright neons. Phillip Lim based an entire collection on lush botanical prints and made florals chic.  Lim's take on the print was refreshing since we usually associate florals as being soft and romantic.

We've always been a fan of incorporating splashes of color into outfits -- and what better way than fluorescent neons to brighten up a spring wardrobe?

Botanical Prints X Neon

Wanting to push the limits of how many trends we can wear at once, we combined botanical prints and neon for a showstopping look.

Why it Works: We've picked coral as the standout color and have incorporated different shades of the pretty hue into the entire look.  Cedric Charlier's Neon Blazer is the perfect foundation piece and can be worn endlessly this season. (Think jeans and a t-shirt for a more toned down pairing.) A Peter Som blouse and Milly Mesh Paneled Skirt are pretty separates that compliment each other nicely.

Accessories that compliment the overall color palette are essential in achieving a look that is pulled together.  Yves Saint Laurent's Cabas Gunmetal satchel compliments the greys in the Peter Som blouse.  Mawi's Spike Earrings add a punky element and Chloe's Crystal Sandals balance out this feminine yet chic ensemble.

Unexpected Fashion Companions: Lace Meets Tie-Dye

Unexpected Fashion Companions Lace X Tie Dye2

Lace detailing has been a hit on the spring runways and we love that the delicate fabric has made it's way into everything from gorgeous gowns to unexpected pieces like trousers and clutches.

If you're looking for a way to freshen up this frilly trend, why not try pairing lace motifs with tie-dye prints?

Yes, we know this may seem like an odd combination, but trust us, when done right, the resulting look is totally cool.

Why this works: Our outfit is made up of muted tones so the two bold elements of lace and tie-dye aren't an eyesore.  We have also chosen a modern take on tie-dye. This is not your traditional hippie dippy colorful print. Raquel Allegra's Tie-Dye Tee is a perfect update on the psychedelic print. We've paired it with Vanessa Bruno's Emerald Lace Pants for a winning look that is totally chic.  Rag and Bone's Racer Blazer adds a masculine touch to this decidedly feminine outfit. If you're looking for something a bit tougher, a cropped motorcycle jacket will work just as well.

Sleek accessories are the perfect way to top off this look. Alexander Wang's Kamila Booties add another dose of edge along with Acne's Double Clear Sunglasses. Tateossian's Dagger Pendant Necklace is the perfect minimal accent to compliment your modern and feminine look.
