The pair—who played the perfect unraveling couple in 500 Days of Summer—posted a YouTube video a couple of days ago, playing ukuleles and singing the classic “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”
And though Deschanel has proven her singing chops before (in the band She & Him and by appearing on soundtracks for films like Elf), Gordon-Levitt has a surprisingly good voice as well.
The classic song was written by Frank Loesser in 1947. Loesser is a musical legend, having also penned the Academy Award-winning track “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
He also won multiple Tony Awards for writing the music and lyrics to Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which recently had a run on Broadway starring Daniel Radcliffe.
“What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” has been tackled by a variety of artists in the past. Two of the best, among the plethora, are film star and musical legend Lena Horne, and jazz singer, Nancy Wilson.
Horne gives the song the full instrumental treatment and makes it a heartfelt ballad, while Wilson makes it jazzy and playful.
