Making a Case for Spring Footwear: Blocks, Mules and Slides

No outfit is ever complete without shoes. Flats, heels, wedges or boots — they can be a simple accessory or become your statement piece of the day. Each new season brings with it new shoe trends, and this spring, stores are bursting with trendy and daring pieces of art for you to rock on your feet. Here are our hottest shoe styles for spring:

Lace Up Flats

This trend takes the ballerina flat to a whole new level. With laces criss crossing up the middle and sometimes around the ankle, they will have you feeling like a gorgeous dancer. They are very practical and will never fall off your feet, but they also pair well with almost any outfit — from skinny jeans to a skater skirt.

Ankle Straps

Keeping with the ballet look, the simple ankle strap is big this season. You will often find it at the very tip of a pair of flats or a chunky heeled shoe as a simple accent to finish off the look. Or you may find a statement shoe with a thick ankle strap or even two. Of course, you can hide the strap underneath a pair of trousers, but it looks best when worn with a dress or skirt, showcasing it’s beauty.

This season’s flip flop. The slider sandal has no uncomfortable piece of rubber in between your toe, instead you simply slide on and go. You can find this shoe trend in many stores and all over the internet. From simple rubber and black to more glamorous leather and metallics, you are sure to see a wide range of these shoes worn around during the summer.

Mule Heels

Making a comeback from decades past, the mule has been seen on celebrities everywhere. They’re most popular in neutral tones, but make a real statement in a bright colour. Whether peep toes or closed and pointy, this shoe is comfortable and fashion-forward.

Block Heel

Put aside the stilettos and wedges of other seasons, this spring and summer are all about the block heel. For ladies who are not a fan of heels, or feel as though they may fall over, this style is perfect. It’s sturdy and comes in many heights. Rock a block heel this season and you’ll be turning heads!

Slip on Sneakers

Who ever said fashion and comfort don’t mix?! With a pair of this season’s slip on sneakers, you’ll be on your feet for hours and look like you’ve stepped right off the runway. Go for a more versatile pair in all black, or be daring by sporting a pair of pony hair leopard print. There’s a style and a colour out there for everyone. Even men

By strutting your stuff in one or all of these new shoe trends, you will not only look great, but feel great too. Sturdy heels and flat shoes are taking over, so let this season be the one where you take the leap and try out a new trend!

Work it Out: Seven Versatile Pieces You Can Wear In (and Out of) the Gym

There is no greater time-suck than having to change your outfit before leaving the gym in fear of subjecting the outside world with the sight of your tattered t-shirt and ill-fitting basketball shorts. Oh yeah, and there is also that lumpy sack we call a gym bag. Well, friends, our embarrassing gym moments (always in front of gorgeous, buff guys, of course) have finally come to an end. Clothing companies are now producing workout gear you want other people to see see you in. Check out these seven #hot workout items you can rock around the clock.

Leggings have truly taken our world by storm. From leather to fleece-lined, these classic pieces are available in just about any colour, length or material imaginable. Their stretch and comfort makes them a great piece of workout gear. But toss those black, tattered ones and spice up your workout with a brightly coloured or patterned pair. Many brands are offering stripes, florals and neons to make your workout a bit more exciting.  Now you have no excuse to wear those grungy sweatpants. Strut to the gym in a cute pair of leggings and you'll be sure to turn some heads.

Lululemon has always been known for their comfortable, long lasting and aesthetically pleasing workout gear. Their clothes are versatile and look hot on everyone. One of their most popular (and coziest!) pieces is the Scuba Hoodie. This layering piece is as comfortable as any boyfriend's XXL hoodie, but it is the shape and unique colours that set the Scuba Hoodie apart. Just throw it on after your workout and head to the nearest market for a snack. No one will know you just sweated out the amount of a small pond.

Probably the most important part of workout gear is the magical sports bra. Seriously, no one wants to see that bounce. Many girls use them underneath tank tops while others, the very confident others, wear their sports bras alone. Whatever your preference, it is important to still look and feel your best. This means even your sports bra should sport a cool design (pun intended) and come in fun colours. Try out different straps, pick one that is two toned or go for a fun pattern that will peak out under your tank. That way, every part of you will feel pretty and ready to get fit.

Just like leggings, crop tops are everywhere. There is no better way to feel relevant in and out of the gym then by pulling on one of the most talked about pieces of the last few years. Of course, if you're planning on wearing it in the gym, stay away from cotton and opt for one that absorbs sweat, like the ones available at Free People. That way, you'll look runway ready and still free to do a lunge or ten.

Put down the book bag. Throw away the plastic shopping bag. And invest in a gym bag, people! Make sure it is big enough for all of your gear, yet maintains the shape of a handbag. Choosing a style with leather straps or metal detailing will make it look less like a workout bag and more like a designer purse.

The worst feeling is catching a glimpse of yourself after a workout and realizing your hair resembles a bird's nest. In this moment, there is very little to do other than throwing it up in a ponytail and hoping for the best. Thankfully, there is another option now: the turban headband. These headbands can be worn during the workout to keep your hair away from your face, or thrown on afterwards to make the best out of a sticky situation. Choose your favourite colour or pattern to draw people's eyes towards the turban instead of your sweaty roots.

The Fitbit is an amazing new piece of technology that tracks your fitness and food intake. It is a great way to visualize your progress while working toward your set goals. Previously, these bulky plastic accessories were not exactly fashion forward. Recently, however, Designer brands such as Tory Burch have taken the plunge and created stunning pieces to accessorize your Fitbit. You will want to wear these pieces everywhere!

Going to the gym is a great thing for both your mind and your body, so every woman should feel beautiful and empowered during and after her workout. With these pieces, you will not only look fabulous, but you will feel it too. No longer do you have to rush from the gym to the car for fear of being seen, you can stop and run some errands on the way home with confidence.

How to Revamp Last Year's Spring Wardrobe with Perfect Pairings

Spring is upon us! Which means warm sun, blooming flowers and of course…a new wardrobe! But, what do you do with all of those beautiful pieces you purchased last year that are no longer “trending”? You revamp them! By adding a new piece, one that may already be in your wardrobe, you can create a beautiful and trendy outfit for spring.

If you own wide leg pants…

Add a yellow top.

According to the the models gracing the spring/summer runways, yellow is going to be a huge colour this season and adding a simple top will go a long way. When paired with last year’s wide leg pants, you’ll have yourself a sunny and sophisticated pair.

If you own a black or white tea length skirt…

Add the opposing colour.

Black and white is another trend we’ve been spotting in abundance on the runway. This monochrome look is not only great for all figures, but can be worn on all occasions as well. When using last year’s midi skirt, you can spice up an old trend with a new palette.

If you own a floral shirt…

Add some culottes.

Celebrities, models and fashionistas everywhere are jumping into a pair of culottes and rocking them like nobody’s business. These wide-legged, midi length trousers can go from day-to-night and look stunning when paired with a floral pattern. Combine last year’s print with this year’s hottest item and you’ll look like a million dollars.

If you own statement jewelry…

Add a shirtdress.

There’s  no better way to liven up a simple shirtdress than with a bold piece of statement jewelry. Choose colour for daytime and at night, add a touch of sparkle to make sure that the shirtdress trend is taken to the next level.

If you own a lace top…

Add military green bottoms.

As seen on “Project Runway All Stars” Season 3, military and lace are a great pairing. Designer Christopher created an army green trench with a lace overlay that was nothing short of amazing.  The good news is it doesn’t have to be that complicated to pull this look off.  A simple lace top paired with military inspired pants is a great way to look trendy and fabulous without trying too hard.

If you own bold coloured lipstick…

Add all white.

Another colour trend seen on the runways is head-to-toe white. A completely white outfit would look stunning with a bright, bold lip. Go with a classic red for a sultry look, spice it up with a pink or be daring by wearing purple. This is a great way to draw the attention towards your face and let your natural features stand out.

A new season does not mean a whole new wardrobe. Instead, it is about using what you’ve got and incorporating new pieces in order to reflect this season’s trends. Have fun with it and always remember to stay true to yourself and your own style.

How to Look "I Woke Up Like This" Effortless

Forget pattern mixing, makeup that takes you hours to perfect or hundred dollar facials. Looking fabulous no longer means looking as if you've spent hours on your hair. With Beyonce's new catchphrase "I Woke Up Like This," everyone is looking for the quickest and best ways to start their day.

So, here are our top tips for looking effortless.

STEP ONE: Moisturize

This step can be completed either the night before or early in the morning. With a clean face and hands, hydrate your skin with a moisturizer of your choice. During the night, or throughout the morning, it will sink in and leave you with a flawless glow.

DON'T FORGET: to include your lips! Using lip balm can prevent cracking or peeling throughout the day.

Kate Somerville 'Nourish' Daily Moisturizer
Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil

STEP TWO: Makeup

Looking effortless means putting aside the liquid eyeliner and full Kardashian-esque coverage foundation. Instead, opt for some concealer for under eye circles and unwanted spots. To finish off, add some blush to give you a flushed tones and open up your eyes with a coat of mascara. If necessary, reapply your lip balm and you are ready to go.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Lash Lifter - Gel Definition Mascara

Smashbox 'O-GLOW' Intuitive Cheek Color with Goji Berry-C Complex

STEP THREE: Stick to Basics

Now it's time to pick out your clothes. When wanting to look effortless, it is best to stick to your basics. Jeans or leggings make a great base. Adding a comfy sweater, a button up shirt or a graphic tee will give you a fashion forward look with no fuss. Shoes are the easy part. Avoid heels and slip on a pair of converse or cute boots to complete the look.

Tshirt: T by Alexander Wang Classic Muscle jersey T-shirt
Jeans: Marble-Effect Distressed Skinny Jeans Black
Shoes: LD Tuttle Ash Geometric Ankle Boots

STEP FOUR: Accessorize

Of course, effortless still means standing out. Ditch the bulky statement pieces and keep the sparkle to a minimum.  Go for delicate pieces and focus more on gold, silver or even the trendy rose gold. A simple pendant necklace or metal studs will add the special touch that your outfit needs. If jewelry isn't your thing, try a beanie or a scarf, but remember to keep the colour and pattern to a minimum.

DON'T FORGET: you are trying to look effortless. Stick to one piece of jewelry or one accessory instead of mixing.

Labour Of Love Black leather skinny belt

STEP FIVE: Rock the Bedhead

When it comes to your hair, embrace the mess. Substitute a brush for finger combing or add a few curls to make it look intentional and time consuming. If you're just not feeling the frizz, throw your locks up into a topknot and let pieces fall where they may. Regardless, don't spend more than five minutes messing with it, the tousled, just rolled out of bed look will always be in.

DON'T FORGET: adding sea salt spray or a bit of dry shampoo can help with texture and volume.

OGX Moroccan Sea Salt Spray
John Masters Organics - Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender - 9 oz.

Truth is, there is one  essential rule when it comes to looking effortless, and it's this:

Do not try too hard.

Your goal is to look like you rolled out of bed gorgeous, but slightly flawed. Strands of hair, a slightly bare face and simple clothing are musts. If you follow these simple steps, adding your own touches along the way, you are sure to look just as beautiful as Queen Bey herself.

There are only a few days left until Valentine's Day, and whether you have exciting plans for a romantic night with the beau, or if you intend to stay in and watch your favorite rom-com, there is one thing every girl has on her mind - the outfit. Don't panic, we've got you covered. Here are six options that will ensure you're looking lovely for your date.

For years, this has been the combination saved for the fashion risk takers, but not anymore! Pink and red is so easy to do, the only trick is to be aware of the saturation. If you're going to rock this colour duo, you need to go bright and  bold and stay away from the light pinks with the dark reds. Be prepared to make a statement, and remember, less is always more.

Pink and Red Picks Under $50

Nothing screams modern day princess (or fashion editor) more than a midi skirt. In any material, in any colour, a midi skirt will make you feel like Cinderella and will definitely impress your Prince Charming. Pair it with a crop top for a sexy vibe or keep it subtle with a loose tank, tucked in.

If you'd rather take a risk with your makeup instead of your outfit, try a bold, bright lip. Go classic with a cherry red or spice it up with hot pink. If you're not as daring, try a gloss to give a subtle colour. Whatever you choose, make sure to wear it with confidence. Some advice for red lips? Rimmel Kate 107 is a great choice.

Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but jumpsuits are the great alternative to dresses and skirts on date night. They give the illusion of more formal attire, without having to pull out tights on a colder evening.  If you're looking for a bit of comfort with a fashion forward feel, the jumpsuit is your best option.

4 Types of Winter Coats You Should Dream About, Splurge On and Score a Steal

No outfit is ever complete without the perfect coat, yet no coat compliments every outfit.

Some require longer, slouchy coats while others demand a short, bomber style. While coats can be quite pricey, they are a staple piece that can hold a place in your wardrobe for years…if you find the right one!

We’ve narrowed down the options and picked out four types of coats every fashion  girl should own.

[note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

This style is great for those ‘in between’ seasons when the weather gets chilly, but you don’t have to zip up your coat quite yet. Throw a leather jacket on over jeans and a top or pair it with a patterned skater skirt and you have an instant touch of tough to balance out the girly style underneath. For a unique twist, try going with a coloured leather such as camel or berry, or go for a jacket with an attached hood. No matter what you choose, you will find yourself reaching for your trusty leather jacket almost every day.

[/note] [note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]Pea Coat

We especially love the showcase of beautiful buttons displayed down the front of the coat. The key to a proper pea coat is to make sure that the one you choose fits you properly. It shouldn’t overwhelm you, but cinch you in slightly at the waist and accentuate your lovely shape. It looks great with leggings and boots or even over a cozy winter dress.

[/note] [note note_color="#faf7f8" text_color="#000000" radius="0"]

If you've got a jean jacket lying around, some well worn tennis shoes or even a blank headband, they can be made trendy again with the addition of a few metal studs. Arrange them however you want, just be careful not to go overboard. Remember, less is more when it comes to this look. Want to be completely on trend this season? Get your hand on some rose gold studs.

Belts left to right: ASOS Leather Faux Pony Waist Belt With Contrast Edge Paint, GUESS

Wear a Belt

A belt can take any outfit and make it a bit more sophisticated or add a splash of fun, depending on the size, pattern and placement. If using a skinny belt to cinch in a dress or to adorn a pencil skirt, it will make you look more put together. Not only that, but it will make your waist appear to be the smallest part of you, which is always flattering. If you want to be a bit more exciting, try a wider belt in an animal print or brighter colour. This could spice up a black dress or try it around a trench to make your overcoat the envy of your friends!

Shorten The Lining
Gentle Pleats Midi Skirt in Tan

Shorten the Lining

Midi skirts are all the rage this year and while they are beautiful on their own, you may be getting a little bit bored of wearing the same one all the time. If your skirt happens to have a bottom layer, underneath a sheer or laser cut top layer, try this trick to make your piece new again. Take some scissors and cut the bottom layer until it hits just below your knee. Hem it, and you’ve got a trendy “peek a boo” lining. Adding a dash of skin underneath will give your midi the young and fresh makeover it needs.

Winterize Your Dresses

Winterize Your Dresses  [wpanchor id="Winterize"]

Summer dresses do not have to be packed away when autumn winds hit! Pull out a pair of your favourite tights and a cable knit sweater and throw them on with your favourite summer dress for an adorable winter look. For a more eclectic look, try a pair of coloured or patterned tights.

Stencils left to right: Leopard fabric stencil, Chevron Fabric Stencil

Use a Stencil

Jeans are a classic item that can be found in wardrobes around the world. While they are a staple piece which match almost anything and everything, sometimes they can get a bit boring. To refresh an old pair of jeans, grab a stencil such as hearts or polka dots and some fabric paint in a colour of your choice. Create your very own patterned jeans that will look great with a fall sweater or boyfriend tank in the summer!

Surprise With Print or Texture

A pop of something unexpected always takes an outfit to the next level. When wearing black or denim, it’s always refreshing to be surprised with texture or patterns. Animal print, quilted textures and even fuzzy and furry pieces can make the ordinary extraordinary. Just make sure not to go overboard, just a touch of something wonderful can go a long way.

Really, there are just so many ways to keep your wardrobe on trend.

5 Most Over-the-Top Looks To Walk The Runway At London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week took the UK by storm this September, showcasing Spring and Summer looks of all shapes, colours and textures. While the majority of designs were beautiful and inspiring, a few stood out as slightly ridiculous.

Meadham Kirchhoff

Meadham Kirchhoff

Most of this line seems a bit messy and quite eccentric. The flowing materials and bright colours definitely seem fitting for a summer line, but the awkward shapes and loud combinations would not flatter even the most beautiful of models. Kirchhoff definitely gets points for creativity, but this look would never make the best dressed list.

Cassandra Verity Green

Cassandra Verity Green

Another collection of colour and loud patterns, which make for an exciting summer wardrobe. Unfortunately, this outfit mixed with the wild blue hair make for a fashion don’t. This model looks a bit like a martian on her first day of kindergarten. The contrasting collar mixes two beautiful colours, but the patterns are a bit overboard and the collar looks as if she’s trying a bit to hard to look professional. I doubt we will be seeing any celebrities rocking this outfit next year.

While the bows are definitely not practical, they are a unique touch to this collection of bold colours and beautiful textures. While many of Sibling’s designs were quite beautiful and could be seen on the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker or Jennifer Anniston, the designer took a risk when deciding to place tape over some of the model’s nipples. It fits in with the “free the nipple” campaign, but also comes off as a bit tacky and ruined the look of the line. Adding a cute crop top, this look would have looked a lot more fun and a lot less shocking.

Sophia Webster

With a line of swimsuits and shoes, Webster already stood out among designers, but it was the jungle theme that took her line over the edge. This look (right) in particular puts more focus on the model’s face than the outfit, but when you do look at the clothing, or lack there of, you notice nothing but strings and beads.

The shoes look a bit like those that might be found on a little girl playing dress up. It is not a very flattering design, nor is it one that would be practical at any old beach. The strangest part about this outfit - the thigh strings, which would emphasize any tiny bit of fat a woman carries in that area. Definitely not ideal.

George Styler

Another beach inspired line, but this one comes with beautiful candy colours and even a little something for the men! While some of the dresses are beautiful, this outfit leaves a lot to be desired. The bathing suit dates back to the 80s with high cut sides, yet shows far too much skin with added cutouts. The designer lifejacket with a complimentary kitten is not something any woman that's not named Miley Cyrus would be caught in. As you move up, you notice that even the hairstyle is over the top and confusing. This whole ensemble makes you wonder if the designer sent it out on the runway as a joke.

It was definitely a week full of parties, stars and fashion; a week where designers got to be in the spotlight, and while some came out on top, others may need to return to the drawing board.

5 Fashion Rules You Need To Break NOW

Trends change every season, yet it seems as though the rules for fashion never really change. What not to wear to a wedding, which colours do not suit your skin and many others have created boundaries for fashionistas around the world. Yet, as the season’s trends shift once again, it is time for a change. Here are five fashion rules that need to be broken.

Gold And Silver JewelryDont Mix Gold and Silver Jewelry

Wear your favourite gold studs with your silver watch, throw on that rose gold necklace and a platinum ring, mixing metals is a great way to add personality to any outfit. Forget being matchy-matchy, when it comes to your jewelry be creative and wear whatever you want!

Do Not Wear White After Labour DayDo Not Wear White After Labour Day

It may seem like a summery shade, but white can be worn during any month of the year. Whether in the form of a cable knit sweater on a chilly day or a pair of wide leg trousers at a corporate event, white is always simple and classy. Do not hide it away during the winter, embrace it in a whole new way.

Tall Women HeelsTall Women Shouldnt Wear Heels

No woman should be afraid to stand out or be denied the privilege of wearing a hot pair of heels. Instead, women with height should embrace their gift and strut their stuff. Regardless of whether their man is shorter or whether they tower above their friends, these women should feel confident and beautiful in whatever shoes they wear.

Red Lipstick Only For NightRed Lipstick is Only For Night

A bold lip is the best way to spice up a dreary day. During the warmer months, try a brighter red or even one with an orange undertone to keep it feeling light and bright. When the wind starts to blow, opt for a darker, more sultry red; you could even choose one with hints of purple. Remember, a red lip screams confidence and elegance, so make sure your outfit compliments your makeup choice.

Never Wear Double Denim2

Never Wear Double Denim

When done correctly, denim on denim can look extremely fashion forward and effortless. Try a light wash shirt over darker jeans or a dark jean jacket with denim cropped pants. The options are endless, just make sure to avoid matching denim. No one wants to look as though they are wearing a denim pant suit. Play around with dark and light washes and find the perfect denim look for you!

Rules are made to be broken, especially in fashion. It is all about experimenting, making mistakes and learning what makes you look your best.
